Detroit hip hop legend J Dilla's legacy has been realized in the form of his family's long-awaited Dilla's Delights doughnut shop, which opened its doors in Harmonie Park on Tuesday.

Eater Detroit says the venture is three years in the making, an effort led by Herman Hayes, aka "Uncle Hayes," the uncle of the late rapper.

The spot officially opened to the public at 5 a.m. Tuesday and by mid-morning had already sold out of of the fried sweet stuff. Eater says the doughnuts are actually being made at Avalon International Bread in Midtown and then are delivered fresh daily to the small brick and mortar.

Dilla's Delights have been delighting eaters for years, available at Parker Street Market, Cafe con Leche, Goodwells Natural Foods, and Red Hook Detroit. Hayes started making them as an homage to his late nephew, who died in 2006, just as his Donuts album was released.

Dilla's opens at 5 a.m. Monday-Saturday and closes whenever the shop runs out of treats. It's located in the Ashley building at 242 John R.
