9 Movies about or set in metro Detroit on Netflix

It's Saturday. It's cold and rainy. It's a Netflix kind of day. If you're not going out in Detroit, you might as well be watching movies about it. Here are 10 movies you can find on Netflix that are set in or about our fairest metro area.

This 2012 documentary focuses on the economic decline of the city and its effects on those who live there along with its infrastructure. It won't make you feel warm and fuzzy, that's for sure.

Another 2012 doc, this one follows Detroit firefighters. While you're watching, check out our interview with the film's director here

Detroit Rock City
Check out this '99 flick and enjoy the mindless comedy and a little KISS.

Eminem AKA
This 2004 doc chronicles Marshall Mathers' rise to fame. Now a decade old, it's interesting to see how much further the rapper has come.

The Fab Five
This 2011 documentary explores the 1990s Michigan Wolverines men's basketball players known collectively as the Fab Five: Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson.

Freaks and Geeks
Not a movie, but rather an iconic series that was tragically cancelled after just one season. This sitcom about a group of high schoolers from Ann Arbor is now Netflix gold. Thanks to you, Judd Apatow.

30 for 30 Bad Boys
Another ESPN Films documentary, this one chronicles the late '80s and early '90s Detroit Pistons, a team that seemed willing to do anything to win.

Detroit 9000
In this 1973 cult classic street-smart white detective teams with educated black detective to investigate a theft of $400,000 at a fundraiser for a local politician.

The Virgin Suicides
A favorite of every angst-y teen (and, OK, twentysomething), TheVirgin Suicides is set in Grosse Pointe and stars Danny DeVito, Kirsten Dunst, James Woods, and Josh Hartnett. The Duggars could probably learn something from this flick.

Notable Exclusions
For one reason or another these movies set in Detroit aren't on Netflix. We're just reminding you exist.

8 Mile
Eminem stars in this biopic that's loosely based on reality. RIP Brittany Murphy.

Whip It
Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore star as derby girls in this film. It's set in Texas, but some of Detroit's real derby girls were selected to appear in the film. Several scenes were also filmed in Hamtramck and Ferndale.

Gran Torino
When Clint Eastwood first started resembling the Crypt Keeper. But yea, also a really good movie.

Singing, dancing, Beyonce, Jamie Foxx – you know the rest.
