Sam Prekop’s vacation from The Sea and Cake is a departure of the neighborly kind. He’s still the late-blooming guitar player-singer – of TSAC’s precursor band, Shrimpboat – who works best in the realm of enigmatic soundscapes and roaming pop songs. Pinning his territory on the musical map is a game of proximity and not exactness, which may also be a good description of the way he works. Somewhere near the intersection of jazz, rock and oddball lounge, he is joined by producer Jim O’Rourke and Archer Prewitt (Coctails) et al. for supperclub headtrips that pack both a seriousness and a degree of sarcasm. "Showrooms" and "Faces and People" are the stuff of inner monologues – verbal or non-verbal – spurred by a walk through a city, a drive through trees and, vaguer still, being near people and in places. The scenery starts flat and depressingly lifeless, then expands to nearly inspiring, like a deflated balloon that just needed someone with enough vision and lung capacity to pop out its dimensions into something worth marveling at.
