Good stuff

Soul Clique is good. These brothers make good music. And their stuff sounds like other stuff I’ve seen before: Unification sounds like a human sandwich I saw two guys and a girl make at a party back in college. They were dancing to Prince’s "Anothalovaholeinyohead." It was good.

"Threshold" has this guitar that sounds like the steel hot comb my mother used to give me a blowout. That was in 1974. She would trap my head between her knees, and the comb would yank my hair and go "plink, plunk," like the guitar. It hurt. But my hair looked good.

"Reverence" sounds like that deep "thmmm" that used to play just before Bono leaned to the side and sang, "Wiiithhooorrwwiiiithhhouuuttyyooooooohhooohhh." Good.

"Martyr" sounds like church in hell. Is that good?

"What Love Is" sounds like how stupid I felt when my college girlfriend quit me while my roommate stood behind me drinking a 40 and saying, "Damn. She kinda foul, B." They made the song sound just like that night. Sad, but good.

You know why you should buy Soul Clique’s Unification album? Because it’s good. And you can listen to it, and see how much stuff sounds like stuff you’ve seen before. Like "Don’t You Cry?" sounds sneaky. Sneaky like the time I snuck Blahblahblah into my house in the 11th grade and we … she … it was good.
