earlier this month about their efforts to bring UK electronic artists to MOCAD. Their DJ night "Aphotic Segment" is a monthly music event in Detroit, held every first Sunday of the month at Nancy Whiskey.
"Aphotic Segment's mission is to provide an environment from which our guests can freely express their musical perspective, without the confines of a traditional club atmosphere," says Pompa by email. "Too often, sound is presented myopically in a context that focuses on a particular scene or style. The current structure often serves to narrow the participant’s exposure, frequently at the expense of a broader spectrum of what exists or what may be."
Pompa says that they seek to "bridge electronic elements to rock and punk, to Africa disco, lo-fi weird nuggets, and beyond in a fashion that is suitable for the listener’s total immersion."
The next Aphotic Segment DJ night will be held on Oct. 5 and features special guests Mitchell Bros. — Mikel Smith from Detroit Threads
and Walter Wasacz (who penned The Subterraneans column for MT
a number of years ago). We asked Pompa to share some of his favorite tracks with us:
Recloose — "Landscaping": "Matt Chicoine, a.k.a. Recloose, is a Detroit ex-pat whose career as a producer began nearly 15 years ago on Carl Craig's Planet E imprint. From his critically acclaimed Spelunking
EP, 'Landscaping' explores the many different influences of Recloose, from jazz and drum 'n' bass to hip-hop and psychedelia."
What We'll Be — "Clara Moonglow's Magic": What We'll Be is comprised of Pipé Scuttlworth of the Siege and partner Jeremiah Klinger, who is the guitarist from New York post-rock outfit, Gregor Samsa. These two have teamed up to release their first EP on the We Are All Machines label. 'Clara Moonglow's Magic' is their title track, which captures a range of emotions, starting with a captivating lift-off which crescendos into motorik drum beats and orchestral synth arrangements."
Demdike Stare — "Past Majesty": Demdike Stare is one of our favorite artists, having turned out prolific album after album. Under their Test Pressing series, the two have migrated into more rugged terrain, finding inspiration in the subliminal, yet blissful sounds of UK industrial and noise music. 'Past Majesty' is a bone-crushing, arpeggiated synth slap with melting guitar effects, that rolls together the sounds of techno, darkwave and death metal."
Sivy Foster — "Love Dawn": "Some of the initial material created by the man with many monikers, Domenico Ricchini. This superb tune was recorded in 1979, during the early conception of the Italo era. Loose knit arrangements, synth sprinkles, and scattered whimsical vocals concoct this timeless gem."
Human Sexual Response — "Public Alley 909": "This was a score that was made digging deep into the crates at UHF. This cut has a multitude of influences. There is a dark brooding post punk-esque element that builds throughout the duration, accompanied by eerie cosmic pads. All of this on top of the array of percussion make this great for the dancefloor or at home."
Suicide — "Speed Queen": Legendary New York band composed of Alan Vega and Martin Rev. They're a band that is truly ground-breaking in our eyes. Their brand of minimalist electronic punk incorporated elements of pop, industrial, and rockabilly, among many other sounds. 'Speed Queen' is a haunting and hypnotic track from their 1981 live album, Half Alive
, which was a collection of live and demo material recorded between 1975 and 1979."
