Happy birthday, University of Michigan alum Madonna Louise Ciccone!

Madonna Louise Ciccone was born on this day in Bay City, Mich. in 1958. She is best known as a singing recording artist under just the name of Madonna. Her relationship to her home state can best be characterized as ambivalent, but we still love her.
Madonna attended the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance before dropping out and moving to New York City to pursue a career in modern dance.
After performing in the music groups Breakfast Club and Emmy, she signed with Sire Records (an auxiliary label of Warner Bros. Records) in 1982.
She released her self-titled debut album the following year.
