For most, the word “teenager” brings up cringe-worthy memories of awkward hallway exchanges, shitty poetry, and bad haircuts. In the case of 19-year-old Lindsey Jordan of Snail Mail, she’s got teenage malaise on lock thanks to a record deal, a sharpened wit, and an enviable emotional intelligence regarding relationships and growing up. And, yeah, her poetry is great and her haircut is cute. Her debut record Lush, released this past summer, is creeping up on some year-end best-of lists because, as much as it is honest, it’s Jordan’s masterful restraint that sets her apart.

Snail Mail will perform at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at Deluxx Fluxx; 1274 Library St., Detroit; 313-788-7015; deluxxfluxx.com; Tickets are $12-$14.
