Andy T's Urban Vision is the first mid-career retrospective of Detroit-based installation artist Andrew W. Thompson, popularly known as “Andy T.” As a sculptor, Thompson gives new life to discarded objects such as tires, grocery bags, plastic bottles, and mailing envelopes, thereby integrating questions of environmental, social, and economic sustainability into the context of art. Treating art as a “fundamental life-organizing principle,” the artist observes, researches, and interprets how everyday items circulate, shape, and express social beliefs and cultural customs. 313-593-5087

The Stamelos Gallery Center is proud to share Piece by Piece: Recent Work from Regional Fiber Artists with the campus and greater community. Fiber lends itself to an exploration of the potency of being human. The familiarity of a frayed edge, a softness to comfort us, or a thickness to protect us; fabric reminds us of how we need to be held. It takes us back to the ways we care for each other, the ways our ancestors have blended need and beauty by weaving, knotting, spinning, dyeing, and making for centuries. This medium is not only artistic in practicum,… 313-593-5087

The exhibition will explore the mirroring relationship between art and self as well as art and communities, highlighting the role of art in achieving personal visibility and social connection. It has been said that art reveals who we are. And the mirroring power of art is key to creating positive and meaningful representations of LGBTQ+ folks. This timeless examination is especially relevant in the current political atmosphere when the freedom to express visibility is under mounting assault. (313) 664-7458; (313) 873-4010 (FAX)
