Chowing down — Downtown Detroit’s American Coney Island is providing its third annual opportunity to watch competitors stuff their faces with Detroit’s beloved Coney Island hot dog. Competitors will have to down more than 10 dogs in 10 minutes in order to even contend with 10-1/2-dog record-holder DeSean “Whipdog” Whipple. Come out and cheer on the competitors, starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at American Coney Island, 114 W. D-licious — Next week, marks the return of Detroit Restaurant Week. The twice-a-year event offers diners the opportunity to enjoy fixed-price meals at some of the city’s swankier restaurants for $30 (plus tax, tip and drinks). The list of restaurants includes Andiamo Riverfront, Angelina Italian Bistro, Da Edoardo Foxtown Grille and more. Since the promotion started in 2009, more than 200,000 diners have participated. It all begins Friday, Sept. 20, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 29. See detroitrestaurantweek.com for more information.

Epic Win — The folks at the Epicurean Restaurant Group — which owns and operates such fine eateries as Northern Lakes Seafood Restaurant, Gastronomy, Coach Insignia — presents a new eater called Epic Café. It’s a swanky sort of lunchroom serving a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches and entrées for dining in or carryout. It’s in the D lobby of the Michigan Design Center, 1700 Stutz Dr., Troy; open, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

Devour it Yourself — Yes, Ferndale’s DIY Street Fair will have great live music and a lively marketplace, but there will also be plenty to nosh on. You can inhale hearty barbecue from Detroit BBQ Company, scarf down handcrafted sausages from Corridor Sausage Co., and there will even be vegan options from Om Cafe. As you’d expect, many of the vendors will use handmade or locally sourced ingredients. And you can wash it all down with beer and cocktails from the beverage tents. It takes place
