Tapping into the sort of old-timey retromania sweeping pop culture as of late (the company takes its name from an old shoe polish brand), Shinola opened its doors last year as a purveyor of watches, bicycles and leather goods manufactured (well, at least assembled) right here in Detroit. Sure, its wares come with a higher price tag — anyone in the market for a $3,000 bike? — but part of that cost is buying that warm, fuzzy feeling you get for helping a great American city. At any rate, Shinola seems determined to make Detroit its home, recently installing four street clocks around town.
