Plenty of smaller theaters try to engage their community, but none builds a deeper bond than the Matrix. The Matrix Writers Circle, for instance, writes original scripts for the theater, dealing with issues important to the Southwest Detroit community that patronizes it. The group’s latest play, Cain’s Row, concerns two brothers who are caught with illegal drugs and sent to jail. Once released, they follow different paths as they attempt to rebuild their lives. Each performance ends with a talk-back session, in which audience members can quiz the cast and crew.
