Detroit's own Kem heads to Chene Park for a special double-header

It wasn’t until the Detroit-raised Kim Owens, better known as Kem, embarked on a journey of spirituality that he discovered his musical path.

After writing, producing, and financing his debut album using only his credit card and funds saved from singing top 40 songs in a wedding band and waiting tables, Kem was soon scooped up by Motown Records where career would flourish into Grammy nominations and Billboard Music Award victories.

Proceeds from Friday’s concert (which also features Tamar Braxton) benefits the National Association of Black Journalists, while Saturday’s pairs Kem with neo-soul singer India.Arie as the headliner.

Kem will perform at 8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 3 and Saturday, Aug. 4 at Chene Park Amphitheatre; 2600 Atwater St., Detroit; 313-393-7128; cheneparkdetroit.com; Tickets start at $41.
