Live/Concert

Drew McDowall

When: Sun., Dec. 13, 9 p.m. 2015

Among the more exciting and unexpected shows in a while is this Marble Bar date by this Brooklyn, New York, resident who’s a master of awesome, spooky, and experimental sound. As a Glasgow youth in the 1970s, McDowall navigated from violent gang subcultures through punk (starting a band with his then-wife and future Strawberry Switchblade co-founder Rose McDowall) and then the experimental edges of sound with folks in the same scene as Psychic TV. As such, he found himself collaborating with Coil, an enigmatic and excellent group started by Throbbing Gristle’s Sleazy Christopherson and John Balance. McDowall pushed the group to explore drone-based and more compositional material. Lately, he’s been crafting dense and often beautiful music both on his own and with Compound Eye. Do not miss this, even if you don’t wear black every day, or know what “NWW list” means.
