As you can see, we are not just another entertainment booster. We take our arts seriously. But no more seriously than we take our news. The arts are only one facet of the multi-dimensional lives that Detroiters lead.
Detroit has always been a great newspaper city. We think there’s room for one more. We’ve been working for over a year to bring this issue to you. But as you probably know, it is becoming harder and harder for small independent newspapers to survive. People have told us that Detroit cannot, or will not, support an attempt at serious independent journalism. We think they’re wrong.
Every other major city in the country counts on such a paper for vital information that is not supplied by the dailies or by slick city magazines. Certainly Detroit, the sixth largest city in the U.S., merits an alternative paper of some substance.
The content of this first issue is our real editorial. We’d like to hear what you think of it. We need your encouragement, your criticism, your talent, and your financial support.
Send us your letters. Contribute your listings to our calendar. Let us know if you’d like a stack of papers in your store. We’re in search of writers, and artists. And we need people to support the paper financially — with subscriptions, advertising and investment.
Detroit deserves an independent voice. Let us hear from you.
We’d like to thank our freelancers, distributors and friends for their support and encouragement. But most of all, we’d like to thank our advertisers. Please patronize them.
