The fall opera season opens with Strauss’ horror-filled, signature opera Elektra. Enraged over her father’s murder at the hands of her mother and her mother’s lover, Elektra vows to seek revenge. Strauss’ opera follows its title character’s vengeful journey with musical complexity that stretches the singing voice and demands a powerful orchestra. One of the composer’s earlier works, written in 1909, Elektra was Strauss’ first collaboration with the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal.
