While modern-day America associates Halloween with dismembered bodies and murderous clowns, the holiday has more whimsical origins. If you’re not into the bastardized version filled with guts and gore, head to Greenfield Village where you’re likely to have an encounter with the Grim Reaper and the Headless Horseman, but no one is getting a cash bonus if they make you piss your pants. A thousand jack-o-lanterns will light your way through the village’s main thoroughfares and characters from The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, and other fantastical stories will greet you along the way.

Starts at 6 p.m.; 20900 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn; thehenryford.org; 313-982-6001; Tickets are $16 for nonmembers, $13.75 for members.

Price: $13.75-$16
