Though he may not be a household name when it comes to great American singer-songwriters, McMurtry’s brand of roots rock is unique. Son of famed novelist Larry McMurtry, it’s no wonder James’ work is rich and painterly, and makes for a perfect bedfellow for a hazy, Western getaway. And it’s not just his smooth narrator tonality or his clever lyrical cadence that makes McMurtry standout — he’s often overlooked as one hell of a guitarist.
