While Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, and Poison were doing their thing in the ’80s, Loudness was rocking just as hard halfway across the world in Japan. Loudness’ debut album, 1981’s The Birthday Eve, set the standard for the hair metal scene in Japan, and even garnered serious attention stateside. They were the first Japanese heavy metal act signed to a major label in the United States, and worked closely with American producer Max Norman, known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne.
