Mike Jellick Trio

When: Fri., June 26, 9 p.m. 2015

A genuine child prodigy (at 2 years old, he could play the “Star Spangled Banner” on the family piano), the Livonia native was playing jazz clubs by the time he was in college. In 2008, he left for Chicago for two years, where he honed his skills “woodshedding” with the Windy City’s jazz cats. He’s now one of the most sought-after jazz pianists in the Midwest, and he has worked with Rodney Whitaker, Dwight Adams, Vincent Chandler, and even Karriem Riggins. A straight-ahead bandleader, Jellickcan channel the “cool jazz” of keysman Ahmad Jamal, but he’s just as likely to take a gentle, likable Vince Guaraldi standard and punch it up with hisunpredictable right hand. He’s also good at sharing the spotlight with drummer Jesse Kramer and bassist Miles Brown. And it all takes place in the grand setting of Cliff Bell’s.
