When: Thu., Sept. 15, 8 p.m. 2016
This is quite an event for connoisseurs of American roots music: Two of its most adept, wily practitioners teaming up to face off and get down. NRBQ remains one of the most unpredictable, savvy, just plain ridiculously fun bands on the face of the planet. It’s a wonder they didn’t pick up most of the Grateful Dead’s audience after Jerry made his final ascent, but it must be their lack of obviousness that got in the way. Los Straitjackets play a supercharged brand of instrumental music that mixes and matches decades’ worth of sound. But it’s OK if you just call them those surf rock guys in the Mexican wrestling masks, because that’s basically what they are. But they’re also much, more, so it’s fitting they’re playing with NRBQ tonight. Doors at 8 p.m.; 22920 Woodward Ave., Ferndale; themagicbag.com; $25.
