11 FRI • MUSIC Gunda Gottschalk — A possible last hurrah for Entropy Studios, this farewell will be an evening of absolute beginnings. As she stops by Hamtramck as part of her U.S. tour, Gunda Gottschalk, equipped with both her violin and viola, is here to astonish and amaze. Classically trained but influenced heavily by free improvisation and avant-garde music, Gottschalk will perform an evening of truly anomalous offerings; after many years of an association with the recently departed musical visionary Peter Kowald, the possibilities are infinite. As the evening will be entirely impromptu, remind yourself that never before or again will the all-original musings of these stringed instruments be heard. Support the brave and progressive New Music Society: admission is on a sliding scale, though $10 is suggested. Soak in hair-raising music at Entropy Studios, Hamtramck; 10338 Joseph Campau at Caniff.
13 SUN • FUN FOR ALL Get Slimed! —The average parent knows that knowledge is power, and the average kid maintains that green slime is cool. That having been said, the place for kids this weekend is Detroit’s Eighth Annual Education Expo. Watch out, because the standard 3 "R’s" have a stowaway … the super-fun letter "G" will be tagging along for the ride. Reading, writing, arithmetic and goo are the name of the game for Nickelodeon’s most popular audience-participation show, Game Lab! which will have two showings: the first at 12:30 p.m. and the second at 2:30 p.m. Young guests (ages 4-10) are invited to partake in a variety of events, including a test of their reading and math skills with Kumon teachers and a chance for the little ones to take a glimpse into their bright futures with a design station that will create graduation caps and photos. Oh, and did we mention it was free? The green gooeyness commences at the Southfield Civic Center, 26000 Evergreen Road (just south of I-696), Southfield. Call 248-354-4866 for more info.
14 MON • MUSIC Lamya — If haven’t heard of her yet, you will. Born in Kenya and raised in Sheffield, England, this exotic beauty is reminiscent of Sade in aesthetic and tone, but majestic string arrangements, stream-of-consciousness-like lyrics and eastern instrumentation distinguish her from the herd of one-hit soul divas. With her laid-back hip-hops rhythms and dance beats, the only richness that could accent this raven-haired beauty is her hauntingly beautiful voice. The appeal of Lamya spans from club-loving teenagers to adult contemporary fans; suffice it to say that she has all the earmarks of the "next big thing." Original enough to be cool, her remixes are already being heard at discotheques, but one can easily imagine this sexy chanteuse’s songs blaring from the finest Bose system in the still-leathery odiferous front seat of a BMW. Be the first to know at the Magic Bag, 22920 Woodward, Ferndale. Call 248-544-3030 for further information.
