Urban bright — “Poorly planned development is increasingly threatening the quality of life in our communities, and architects, urban planners and community decision makers are looking for alternatives that will deliver growth that is smarter,” notes Beth Yorke, president of the American Institute of Architects’ Detroit chapter. That group, in conjunction with the Grosse Pointe chapter of the League of Women Voters, is sponsoring a panel discussion titled “Smart Growth: Making the Case to Promote the Well-being of Our Cities.” The event will be held 6:30 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 24, at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, 32 Lakeshore Dr., Grosse Pointe Farms. Moderated by Detroit Free Press reporter John Gallagher, the discussion features a host of well-respected local experts, including Wayne State University planner and demographer Kurt Metzger, Ferndale City Manager Tom Barwin and Steve Vogel, dean of the school of architecture at University of Detroit Mercy.
