Court appointed psychiatrist, Martha Livingstone, is called to a Catholic convent when a newborn infant is found dead in a wastepaper basket. The suspect is Agnes, a young nun, and the baby’s mother. In spite of strong resistance from the convent and its Mother Superior, Livingstone must determine if Agnes is mentally fit to stand trial for murder. But just what has happened--who killed the infant, who is the child’s father and why is Mother Superior so fiercely protective of Agnes?
