It bears repeating that Six Organs of Admittance’s origins lie in the fact that Ben Chasny spent lots of money sending away for heavy, psychedelic, privately pressed records in the 1990s, but kept finding that they just weren’t psychedelic enough for him. So he started the project in 1998 (one year before joining up with Comets on Fire) to remedy that, and while Six Organs did occasionally make some lovely, folk-inflected music, they were never part of an alleged “freak folk” movement. Their new music is closer to heavy drone metal than anything. Six Organs remains uncompromisingly out there, far more psychedelic than anything currently labeled as such.
