Despite slowly creeping gentrification, Southwest Detroit remains an enclave for Latino Americans. For nearly 20 years, the Blessing of the Lowriders has been a springtime event that coincides with the Cinco de Mayo parade, but also serves to bring the community together. In a 2015 Q&A with founder Victor Villalobos, he says the event was born out of a desire to bust the myth that bike and car lovers are gang members. He started the Blessing of the Lowriders to help create a relationship between the church and the lowrider community. The event also serves as a kickoff the lowrider season and a de facto car show.
