California’s Ty Segall is still in his 20s, still crazily talented, and still working his way methodically through genre constructions of the past with rigor, glee, and plenty of verve. He’s touring with his new, guitar-crazed band, the Muggers. And his latest thing is to more thoroughly encompass 1970s heaviness (though not as thoroughly as in his side project Fuzz, and with a sinister sci-fi edge). Segall’s one of our best pop songwriters, no matter how much fuzz, squeals, and wah his songs get drenched in. Manipulator was easily one of the best records of 2014, and the looser, weirder and more nihilistic, brand-new Emotional Mugger is the Devo/Deviants/Dangerhouse mashup of your wettest dreams.
