Welcome to our first-ever Boat Issue

It's pretty much pointless to live in the Great Lakes State and not enjoy the water. For nine long months, it's too cold to even let your clothes get damp. But during the high-water mark of the summer, Michiganders flock to the lakes, rivers, and ponds — and for good reason. Michigan has a vibrant boat culture, which we decided to dive into for our first-ever Boat Issue. It's still the Motor City — just running on the water this week instead of the roadway.

In this week's issue, we explored the aquatic annual blowout known as the Jobbie Nooner. We dropped anchor at the region's many marinas. We explored the finest waterfront restaurants you can reach by boat. We met people who hunt for treasure using a method known as magnet fishing (yep, it's a thing). We also spoke with one Captain Pidcock, a towboat operator who rescues boaters stranded on the water when things go wrong (or simply when they've had one too many).

So climb aboard, sit back, and pop a cold one, while we set our course for the greatest times the Great Lakes have to offer. It's all smooth sailing from here.
