The BSWP was formed in 1944 to provide formal instruction and workspace for women painters. In 1957 the organization, through business and community support started the Bloomfield Art Association later to be called the BBAC. Through the years BSWP members have served on the BBAC board and many as faculty members today. Members have also been an integral part of Lawrence Street Gallery since its start in 1987 in Pontiac on Lawrence Street.
Juror, Nancy Mitchnick, is a strong professional painter who brings her eye for art from stints as the Rudolph Arnheim Lecturer on Studio Arts at Harvard University for ten years and faculty member for ten years at the California Institute of the Arts. Mitchnick received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, a National Endowment For the Arts award and a Kresge Fellow Award in 2015.
Final jurying will be March 1st. Chairperson, Cindy Parsons stated,” The juror spent time looking long and deeply at the work for the artist’s message and power. She was searching for painterly qualities; strong marks and strong color”.
Lawrence Street Gallery is a coop with members’ work on display in the gallery and online at our website www.lawrencestreetgallery.com. Work can be purchased online.
