Social Media Spread Lice



"Don't forget to tag the lice!"

We get some really out-there press releases here at MT HQ, but every once in a while one of them will send our weird-meter soaring. The latest was a press release quoting the owner of Rapunzel's Lice Boutique. (Did you realize there WAS a Rapunzel's Lice Boutique? No? You'll be floored to realize they have THREE metro Detroit locations!)

Actually, the press release was one of those classic bait-and-switch sort of news bits, designed for an anchorperson to say, "When we come back from these messages: The social networking fad that could give your child head lice." And then, after you've waited through the commercials, you learn  that taking "selfies" with friends could be driving an increase in older children with head lice. Let's let Rapunzel's Sarah Casello-Rees explain: “Lice do not jump or fly, and infestations are spread through head-to-head contact." To prevent head lice from spreading, Casello-Rees recommends avoiding selfies with friends. So remember, the next time somebody wants to nuzzle in for a selfie, you should be repulsed, disgusted and totally paranoid about head lice. Drive them immediately to a Rapunzel's location for one of the shop's free head checks before you even think of it. Alternatively, Photoshop will do in a pinch.
