Those jonesing for menswear staples like bow ties, trousers, blazers, accessories, and more are in luck — Eastern Market's Savvy Chic will soon open a menswear store named "Savvy Gents."
Heading up this venture is Randal Jacobs (who you may have recently spotted in All Dolled Up
). Originally from New York, Jacobs has worked with various fashion houses, from Public School to Ralph Lauren, and this past winter he curated and co-hosted a lecture spotlighting Motown Records' lavish costumes in a presentation titled Live Wire: Black Style on Stage at the iconic Apollo Theatre in Harlem
Jacobs says that as the home of Motown, much of modern menswear to this day derives from images originally created here in Detroit on Grand Boulevard. "I always smile thinking about the Marvin Gaye album cover where the collar of his trench coat is popped or the Commodores wearing the short waisted suit jackets with cropped trousers, which is the basis of many high-end brands like Slimane and Thom Browne," he says.
"Downtown Detroit does have men's clothing options and there are some long standing stores like Spectacles, Henry the Hatter, DSE, and The Broadway, yet there isn't a shop dedicated to just what the modern day gent needs," Jacobs adds. He says Savvy Gents will offer apparel from young designers like Omar X, Anakata, Cyberoptix, and Gunner Doyle, among others, in addition to accessories like beard balm and mustache wax.
The store has a grand opening at 6 p.m. this Thursday, September 18, 2014, next to Savvy Chic; located at 2712 Riopelle in Detroit, Michigan. Complimentary beer and whiskey will be served.
