In case you haven't noticed, it's basically spring, and Punxsutawney Phil says more of it is on its way!
This morning, the "Prognosticator of prognosticators" announced
his prediction in front of thousands of people (seriously).
Legend has it if it's cloudy when Phil emerges from his home, then Spring will come early; if it is sunny, the groundhog will see his shadow, retreat back to his home, and the shitty weather will persist for six more weeks.
Well, here's how it all went down at Gobbler's Knob (quite the name) in Pennsylvania. Eager weather-watchers stood by as Phil was beckoned from his burrow with the tap of a cane shortly after 7:20am — again, thousands of people were watching this. A member of the group tasked with caring for Phil, the Groundhog Club (also known as the "Inner Circle"), held him up high so all could see, and according to NPR
, Phil responded with only a blink.
He was then placed on top of his tree trunk cage and as he attempted to flee, the group closely analyzed his movements.
The emcee then happily proclaimed, "There is no shadow to be cast! An early spring is my forecast!" Adding moments later, "Take your jackets off, you're not going to need them!" which no one did as it was 22 degrees.
