After a 12-year tenure at ESPN, Jemele Hill is reportedly leaving the sports broadcasting giant this week.
reports that Hill and her longtime friend — Kelley L. Carter, another metro Detroit native — are launching a production company called Lodge Freeway Media.
James Miller, author of New York Times
bestseller Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN
, first dropped the news via Twitter, saying that Hill had requested a meeting with ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro. According to Miller's tweets, the "departure/buyout" has been a long time coming for Hill, and that the parting is amicable.
Hill has been something of a lightning rod at ESPN over her vocal distaste for President Donald Trump. In September of 2017, she became a viral sensation after tweeting that Trump is a "white supremacist,"
a move that got here suspended for two weeks from her on-camera role as host of "SportsCenter." This year, Hill has stepped away from the camera and has taken on a role as a writer and reporter for ESPN's affiliate site, The Undefeated,
which focuses on race, sports, and culture.
When we spoke with Jemele Hill earlier this summer
before she returned to Detroit to attend The National Association for Black Journalists Convention, she hinted that there was "unfinished business" for her at ESPN, but that she was open to new career possibilities.
"It would be foolish of me not to think of what else is possible for me beyond ESPN because of my personal desires and things I still wish to accomplish," she said. "I know that whenever I kick off the next iteration of my career, it will involve me getting more deeply involved in producing original content. There are avenues opening up for women of color to provide different perspectives that's something we really wanted to take a hard look at."
Although Hill hasn't publicly confirmed that she is leaving ESPN, she was sure to share a cheeky GIF on Twitter that just added fuel to the fire.
