Just three years after plunking down $231 million for Ferndale salsa maker Garden Fresh, Campbell’s Soup Company is putting it up for sale.
The move is part of a sale of Campbell’s fresh food business, which also includes Bolthouse Farms and Campbell’s refrigerated soup line. Of the three, Garden Fresh is the only one worth eating.
The company said in a news release that the sale also includes Australia's Arnott’s and the Kelsen Group, and both Campbell’s phylums bring in about $2.1 billion in revenue.
Garden Fresh started in the late 90s and made its name on fresh salsa but branched out into tortilla chips, hummus, and dips before the sale. It’s not known whether the company will keep its Ferndale salsa factory — where it employs 300 people — after its purchased.
Former owners Jack and Annette Aronson recently launched
the Great Lakes HPP Food Innovation Center in Taylor.
"HPP" stands for high-pressure processing, which is a pasteurization technique that uses cold-water pressure to make foods safer and stay fresher longer, thus eliminating the need for artificial preservatives.
