Do you smell that? A westward wind carries the scent of fried dough and fruity filling. You can almost feel the powdered sugar on your fingertips. The call of a Polish eagle rings through the streets of Hamtramck and your stomach replies with a growl.

It is almost time for Paczki Day, or Fat Tuesday if you’re Catholic, or Mardi Gras if you’re French, or “cheat day” if you’re on a diet.

Thanks to a tweet from WCSX’s Big Jim O’Brien, it looks like the Paczki trees in Poland are showing their first buds. Soon the blooming baked goods will be dispersed and make their journey to over-indulging bellies all across metro Detroit.

Paczki Day is March 5. Check back as we feature some popular and exotic Paczki in the coming weeks.
