Bassist Don Mayberry keeps time better than a Rolex watch. When the notes and chords start to flow through his body, sweat drips off his face like ice melting off the gutter of an abandoned house. Mayberry's improvisational ability and his complete understanding of jazz, blues and gospel idioms put him in the same company with bassists Milt Hinton and Oscar Pettiford.
