They’re the first punks out of Hawaii since the Waikikis but anyone expecting a night of luau music can just leave their expectations with the cardboard palm tree cutouts onstage. An aggressive power trio with occasional flashes of instrumental brilliance, Pepper’s rock-reggae mix is harder than the Police and more mannered than Sublime, especially when singer-guitarist Kaleo Wassman insists on singing in his ridiculous clipped Jamaican accent. This just-released
DVD captures the band during a two-night stand at the Troubadour in front of an adoring crowd who nonetheless continue to get badgered by Wassman to "make some fucking noise." His badgering is enough warrant an anger management visit from the Dr. Phil counselor on Some Kind of Monster
. It makes you wonder if all the spliffs Pepper hits in the course of the show aren’t just making them more paranoid than mellow. For cheesiest visual pun of the night, check out the Pepper spray coming from Bollinger’s mouth. Bet these fans are sorry they left their Gallagher ponchos at home.
