Yo Gabba Gabba! is mental. If you’ve seen the show, you know what I mean. Host DJ Lance Rock is a livewire crazy person, and the five creatures look like a child’s freestyle take on anime. We interviewed creator Christian Jacobs and that whole experience was whacky, but the show was another thing entirely.
This was my third big children’s production at the Fox inside of two months; I had already taken my son Dylan to see The Wiggles and the Fresh Beat Band, and they were nice in a very sweet sort of way. The “A Very Awesome Yo Gabba Gabba! Live Holiday Show” was bigger in just about every way though. Bigger costumes, bigger lights and computer images, more confetti, etc.
So DJ Lance bounds onto the stage and is soon joined by Muno (the spiky red Cyclops), Foofa (the flower bubble girl), Brobee (green hairy dude), Toodee (cat-dragon), and Plex (robot). They sing dance-happy tunes like “Hold Still” and “There’s a Party in my Tummy,” and thousands of kids go insane.
Best bit of the show for the adults is when Santa Biz Markie comes on stage for the “Biz’s Beat of the Day” segment. A few kids are dragged on, and an awkward exchange between the Biz and said kids commences. “What’s you name?” says Biz. A child answers nervously, and then he or she is judged on their beat-box prowess. Everyone looks petrified.
This thing is great though. Unlike the Wiggles and the Fresh Beat Band, there’s something about this performance that adults can kind of enjoy. It’s oddball entertainment, certainly not traditional kid’s fare. And when Santa joins the cast, I’m as excited as Foofa.Follow @City_Slang
