Detroit isn't particularly well known for being an epicenter for fashion design. There's no real
fashion week. There's no prestigious school that young designers flock to. There's no cohesive collective.
But that doesn't mean fashion doesn't happen in Detroit.
Fashion Massacre, an annual event run by Tyna Logan, is a showcase for the wearable art that's made in and around Detroit. This year the fashion show will feature six local designers — Opulence, AYV, Addictive Brand, Out of Stock, Flyness No Stylist, and Attic Design — and it isn't your typical fashion show with runway models and music.
Instead, the event is referred to as a "showcase" where fashion is paired with art for a unique backdrop. Logan has said she hopes the shows will bring people together as well as help emerging designers find their way to the mainstream. She also works to help designers create and market their own brand.
Aside from producing Fashion Massacre, Logan does styling locally. She works with recording artist Kem, among others, and does some editorial work. She's even produced a fashion show for Mercedes Benz.
Each year Logan chooses a different theme for Fashion Massacre. This year she's riffing off the show's sixth anniversary, calling the show "Number of Man." In keeping with the theme of the number six, the first presentation will start at 7:36 p.m., followed by presentations at 7:56, 8:26, 8:46, 9:06, and 9:26 p.m.
Fashion Massacre: Number of Man will take place at Electric Studio at 51 Harper Ave., Detroit. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $30 for VIP. Click here
